It was a typical day at work. I was walking down the hallway, minding my own business, when I ran into an old friend. We had a quick conversation and then parted ways—until he walked past me a few moments later, his face grim and eyes red. He’d been sexually assaulted that morning. I don’t remember what I did next, except that I started to cry. A lot. I cried at my desk, I cried in the shower, and I cried on the bus ride home. This incident has affected me deeply, both professionally and personally. It’s forced me to re-evaluate my priorities and question what it means to be “good” in this world. What does it mean to be kind? What does it mean to do the right thing even when no one is watching? If we want to create a better world for everyone—including survivors of sexual assault—we need to start with ourselves. And that starts with being kinder to one another.
As a child, Lauren Shulkind was always the one who would step up to help her friends. Whether it was lending an ear when they were having a tough time or lending a hand with homework, Lauren was always there for her friends. This kindness has followed her throughout her life, and it is what has helped make her one of the most caring and compassionate people in the world.
Lauren is currently the CEO and co-founder of DonorsChoose.org, an online charity which allows anyone to donate to their favorite schools or projects. DonorsChoose.org has raised over $2 billion for thousands of schools across America, making it one of the largest online charitable platforms in history.
In addition to her work at DonorsChoose.org, Lauren also spends time working on various other charities such as The Doctors Without Borders (DWB) Foundation and Heifer International. Through these organizations, she strives to help others in need and make a difference in their lives.

Pursuing an Arts Career
After graduating from college, Lauren Shulkind had always intended to pursue a career in the arts. However, she soon realized that the art world was not welcoming to people with a liberal arts degree. “There were very few opportunities for me to work in the arts when I graduated,” says Shulkind. “Most jobs required a degree in something specific like design or animation.” Undeterred, Shulkind decided to take a risk and pursue her dream of being an artist anyway.
Luckily for her, she found an opportunity working as an artist’s assistant on a project for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This experience taught her a lot about the art world and how to navigate it. She also started networking and meeting people in the industry. After two years of hard work, she landed her first real job as an artist’s assistant at an advertising agency.
Shulkind’s persistence paid off and she has since worked as an artist’s assistant on projects for Nickelodeon, Adidas, HBO, and many more companies. She is now self-employed as an illustrator and graphic designer. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Marie Claire, BuzzFeed, GQ India and more.
Shulkind recommends aspiring artists to never give up on their dreams and to always be prepared to take any opportunity that comes their way. “[The industry] can be difficult at times,” she says “but it’s worth it if
Meeting and Marrying Michael
Lauren Shulkind is one lucky lady. She has two incredibly kind and compassionate men in her life, her father Ron and Michael. Lauren met Michael when she was just 13 years old and he was 26. At first glance, the two couldn’t be more different, but something about their connection is undeniable.
Michael is a cancer survivor who has been through so much pain and suffering. He’s also an amazing musician and has played with some of the biggest names in the business. But it’s his kindness that stands out most to Lauren.
“Michael is always so happy and kind,” says Lauren. “Even though he’s gone through so much pain in his life, he still takes time for other people.”
The couple have been married for over six years now and they’re still going strong. They love spending time together cooking, hiking, biking, and just enjoying each other’s company.
There are so many things that a mother does for her child, but one of the most important things is being there for them when they need it. Lauren Shulkind, a blogger and mom of two, has taken to her blog to share some of the kindnesses that she’s done for her kids.
When one of Shulkind’s sons was having a hard time in school, she took time out of her day to talk to him about his difficulties. “I invited him into my office and sat down with him,” she wrote on her blog. “I told him that I loved him and would always be there for him no matter what.”
Shulkind also takes the time to do things that her children will enjoy. When one of her sons wanted to build a tower out of blocks, she helped him build it without breaking any pieces. “It wasn’t easy,” Shulkind admits, “but it was so worth it.”
Shulkind isn’t the only parent who spends time taking care of their children. According to a study by The Huffington Post, mothers spend an average of 2 hours per day taking care of their children – more than fathers do!
